Cal Humanities Grantee

We are proud to announce that Rancho Los Alamitos has received a prestigious HUMANITIES FOR ALL Quick Grant award from California Humanities, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The grant will support our three-part, virtual public program series “Women’s Stories from the Gathering Place,” which would not be possible without the help of California Humanities.

Women’s Stories from the Gathering Place, developed at Rancho Los Alamitos (RLA), was inspired by the Long Beach 2020 Women’s Suffrage Centennial celebration which shed light on the historical contributions of women in the area. This prompted RLA staff to learn more about the contributions of women at our site. With the help of California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) students, we delved into our archives and discovered various ways in which the voices and actions of women at RLA influenced and shaped our community. The series’ title is a reference to our site’s original Tongva name, Povuu’ngna, which means “the gathering place.” Each program centers on a different female figure with ties to RLA. National Charity League volunteers are tying up Narcissus along the Oleander Walk

This organizes the leaves following the Narcissus blooming period. The leaves continue to photosynthesize thus capturing the sun’s energy and transmitting it to the bulbs below ground - building strong energy in the plants’ underground bulbs (for a bigger bloom each subsequent year!)
