The Rancho Los Alamitos Foundation seeks a dynamic and engaging individual to serve as its Manager of Education & Public Engagement. The Rancho recently completed extensive capital improvements to its campus and adopted a compelling strategic plan emphasizing imaginative program development and long-term sustainability. Our highly regarded historic site is positioned to undertake a new and innovative role within the region’s historical and cultural community.

Rancho Los Alamitos reflects and invites exploration of the interaction between people and place, culture and environment, past and present to create a greater understanding of the evolution of Southern California and its place today’s world. The 7.5-acre historic resource comprises the ranch house (constructed c. 1800-1933), four acres of nationally significant gardens, a barnyard area, visitor center, and research archive. The site has been continuously occupied and the land used for more than 1,500 years beginning with the indigenous Tongva people, and the history of the site, as well as the lives of its owners and occupants, make it a perfect metaphor for the Southern California experience. The Rancho Los Alamitos Foundation operates Rancho Los Alamitos Historic Ranch & Gardens in a public-private partnership with the City of Long Beach.

Education & Engagement Manager

Classification: Full-Time, Exempt Position reports to the Executive Director.


The Manager of Education & Public Engagement at Rancho Los Alamitos is a full-time member of the Rancho’s leadership team and is responsible for all aspects of the organization’s educational program and visitor experience. The Manager provides leadership and vision for the development and implementation of innovative programs, events, partnerships, and engagement initiatives. Through the use and building of strategic partnerships and innovative programmatic offerings, the Manager is responsible for increasing the awareness and relevance of Rancho Los Alamitos as tools to enhance the impact of the historic resource within the region.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

    • Responsible for the educational message delivered to visitors on-site or at off-site venues.
    • Oversees the quality of visitors’ experience and maintains the highest level of guest service standards.
    • Responsible for the research, development, implementation, and evaluation of interpretive programs and tours for schools and adults.
    • Creates, organizes, and executes public educational programs and workshops.
    • Supervises, trains, and evaluates the staff and volunteers who interact directly with the Rancho’s guests.
    • Leads the larger institutional team that maps out yearly programmatic offerings.
    • Ensures that the public receives an accurate and engaging interpretation of the history of the site and region in line with Rancho Los Alamitos mission.
    • Identifies and cultivates strategic community partnerships to increase public awareness and engagement through programming.
    • Supervisory functions include:
      • Supervises the Volunteer Coordinator.
      • Supervises docent trainers and docent evaluators.
      • Oversees recruitment, training, retention and recognition of volunteers.
    • Responsible for overseeing and editing the quarterly volunteer newsletter, which is produced by the Volunteer Coordinator.
    • Other duties as assigned; some weekend and evening work required.


    • An MA in museum education, K-12 education, social work, or related field (or a BA and demonstrated experience in community engagement).
    • A minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in museum education, K-12 education, or other forms of public programming and/or community work.
    • Superior oral and written communication skills.
    • Knowledge of standard museum practices regarding learning experiences in a historic site or museum environment
    • Demonstrated experience with educational and/or interpretive programming to meet the curriculum requirements of public-school systems.
    • Must be knowledgeable in Western American history of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, especially California from pre-California to present day.
    • Supervisory experience in managing and motivating paid and unpaid staff.
    • Strong organizational skills including attention to detail, as well as management of multiple tasks and responsibilities while maintaining efficiency.
    • Must be able to speak, read, and write in English.
    • Spanish and/or other foreign language skills are highly desirable.

Working Conditions:

Position requires periods of standing, walking, and/or sitting. May occasionally need to lift and carry up to 25 pounds, push and pull up to 40 pounds with the assistance of a cart, operate office equipment, open and close filing cabinets and boxes, and observe visitors. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required as necessary.

The Rancho is a diverse organization with a small staff and many activities; all staff members must be versatile and cooperative in carrying out a variety of responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Historic Site Public Hours:

Open hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 1:00-5:00 pm for public tours. Admission: FREE.
